Gillette College freshman George Edwards did everything but take tickets at the door in the Pronghorns' 94-90 victory over Miles Community College in the Region IX home opener Saturday at CCHS South Campus.
Edwards, a 6-foot-5 power forward from Chicago, scored 17 of his game-high 29 points in the second half. He hauled in 17 rebounds, 10 on the defensive glass. And if that wasn't enough, he brought the ball up the floor with the Pronghorns (11-4, 2-0 in Region IX) clinging to a three-point lead and knocked down a free throw with seven seconds left to seal the deal.
"George has been averaging a double-double almost every game. He played awfully well tonight," Pronghorn coach Shawn Neary said. "That's as good a team as we'll see all year. It's hard to come off the break and stay focused. I'm really happy for the guys and what they did tonight."
James Hunter and Asante Smiter finished with 12 points apiece and Reece Maxwell had 11 for the Pronghorns, which improved to 2-0 in the region and snapped the Pioneers' six-game winning streak.
Tyree Anderson led Miles Community College (12-3, 1-1 in Region IX) with 27 points and Jeremy Nicolas added 20.
